What can WordPress professionals with their diverse skills bring to the table in these times of crisis? Let\u2019s explore some options \u2013 and let\u2019s collect more in the comment sections below!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Openly sourcing solutions <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rapidly growing volunteer effort (that even bears some resemblance to the WordPress project itself) seems to be the initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpfulengineering.org\/\">HelpfulEngineering.org<\/a>. From its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpfulengineering.org\/about-us\/\">FAQ<\/a>: \u201cHelpful Engineering was created to provide an open source platform for volunteers to design, source and execute projects that can help mitigate people\u2019s suffering from the COVID-19 crisis. Most of the projects are focused on finding solutions to fix the lack of products used by healthcare professionals, including hardware and software, but also non technical products like surgical masks.\u201d At the time of writing, 3,400 volunteers were already working in 35 projects \u2013 see more in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpfulengineering.org\/2020\/03\/we-are-in-the-swarm-mode\/\">this blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judging from a quick view through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpfulengineering.org\/2020\/03\/order-up-our-first-batch-of-projects-is-reviewed\/\">its already ongoing projects<\/a> the focus of this initiative lies on producing hardware products \u2013 but volunteers with backgrounds in \u201cSoftware\u201d or \u201cGraphics, Public Outreach\u201d are asked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpfulengineering.org\/volunteer\/\">join<\/a> as well. And, well, the website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpfulengineering.org\/\">HelpfulEngineering.org<\/a> itself is a WordPress website, so they might need a hand with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another open source effort is IBM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.ibm.com\/callforcode\/\">2020 Call for Code Global Challenge<\/a> which expanded their focus from climate change to also target COVID-19. Learn more about the new focus <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.ibm.com\/callforcode\/blogs\/the-2020-call-for-code-global-challenge-takes-on-covid-19\">in this blogpost<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Local initatives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Restaurants and other small businesses suffer deeply from lockdowns and shop closures. Here is a project idea that utilizes the power of WordPress: creating a directory of local stores and services that are switching their offerings to delivery, call\/click &amp; collect, online shop or similar. One example is <a href=\"https:\/\/hagenliefert.de\/\">Hagenliefert.de<\/a> where the 190,000 inhabitants from the German city of Hagen can connect with local small business for their needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marius Sonnentag (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mrsonnentag\">@mrsonnentag<\/a>) detailed how he set up the platform in his blog article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@sonnentag\/how-to-help-the-local-stores-in-your-area-in-times-of-corona-crisis-with-wordpress-c5c50d28637b\">How to help the local Stores in your Area \u2014 in times of Corona Crisis with WordPress<\/a>\u201d.  Marius describes how he used popular WordPress tools such as Gravity Forms, ACF and Elementor in quickly building the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Individual efforts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I read from some WordPress devs that they are lowering their rates to support local businesses setting up their online stores. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another offer comes from David Baumwald (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DreamEncode\">@DreamEncode<\/a>), WordPress core contributor and developer from Florida:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If any new non-profits related to COVID-19 need any pro bono WordPress help, feel free to contact me. Some big names such as GoDaddy and Yoast are already on there \u2013 but it could be more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from general discounts \u2013 it might be worth contacting theme vendors or plugin developers directly, as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/helpfuleng\/status\/1242145529909391362\">this inquiry from the Helpful Engineering team towards WPML<\/a>  demonstrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What else?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is just a glimpse in what WordPress professionals can do to support the fight against COVID-19.
