{"id":728,"date":"2020-01-10T15:09:13","date_gmt":"2020-01-10T14:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/voneff.de\/?p=728"},"modified":"2020-02-11T10:09:52","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T09:09:52","slug":"the-new-sussexroyal-com-website-through-the-wordpress-lens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voneff.de\/en\/the-new-sussexroyal-com-website-through-the-wordpress-lens\/","title":{"rendered":"The new Sussexroyal.com website through the WordPress lens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>Duke and Duchess of Sussex <\/em>made quite a big splash this week by announcing they would \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2020\/jan\/08\/prince-harry-and-meghan-say-they-are-stepping-back-from-royal-family\">step back from senior roles in the royal family<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I gladly leave all the implications and interpretations of this decision for others to discuss \u2013 but there is one detail that was interesting to me:  \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ajplus\/status\/1214985449648902149\">Meghan Markle and her husband<\/a>\u201d accompanied their announcement with the launch of a new website on the domain <a href=\"https:\/\/sussexroyal.com\/\">sussexroyal.com<\/a> \u2013 and that website is running on WordPress. (Automattic quite quickly took notice via its <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wordpressdotcom\">@wordpressdotcom<\/a> account on Twitter: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wordpressdotcom\/status\/1215307870872276998\">For all entrepreneurs seeking freedom and financial independence: WordPress<\/a>.\u201d) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this post I want to do a quick rundown of the website from a WordPress and website development perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General findings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First thing I noticed was the fact that a *.com domain was chosen instead of a seemingly more fitting *.co.uk domain (<a href=\"http:\/\/sussexroyal.co.uk\/\">sussexroyal.co.uk<\/a> was registered<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nominet.uk\/whois\/?query=sussexroyal.co.uk#whois-results\"> through GoDaddy on 15 March 2019<\/a> but is currently empty).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The website was done by the Canadian agency <a href=\"https:\/\/madebyarticle.com\/\">Article<\/a>, advertising themselves quite prominently in the new website\u2019s footer. The website is running on a custom theme named \u201cBucky\u201d (as in <em>Buckingham Palace<\/em>, maybe?). A look at the header of the main CSS file reveals a little sloppiness on behalf of the website makers as it features the agencys\u2019s old name \u201cExsite\u201d and <a href=\"http:\/\/exsite.ca\/\">the respective website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"721\" height=\"242\" src=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-stylecss.png\" alt=\"The screenshot shows the following info: \n\u201cTheme Name: Change Name \nAuthor: exsite\nAuthor URI: http:\/\/exsite.ca\/\u201d\" class=\"wp-image-730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-stylecss.png 721w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-stylecss-300x101.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 721px) 100vw, 721px\" \/><figcaption>A screenshot from the main style.css of sussexroyal.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some more general findings: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The website is hosted on AWS, apparently in the UK. <\/li><li>The website is running on WordPress 5.3.2, the most current version (revealed through the versioning here: <a href=\"view-source:https:\/\/sussexroyal.com\/wp-includes\/css\/dist\/block-library\/style.min.css?ver=5.3.2\">https:\/\/sussexroyal.com\/wp-includes\/css\/dist\/block-library\/style.min.css?ver=5.3.2<\/a>)<\/li><li>The standard WordPress login page has been moved. <\/li><li>Judging from the name of upload folders the website has been already in development at least since September 2019 (as also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2020-01-08\/meghan-harry-new-approach-media-strategy\">L.A. Times has noticed<\/a>, for example). <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Staging site still active<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"548\" height=\"369\" src=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-staging.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-staging.png 548w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-staging-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><figcaption>Whoopsie, the staging website is still live!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digging a little through the source code I discovered that at least one link on the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sussexroyal.com\/community\/\">Community<\/a>\u201d sub-page is still pointing to a development version of the website under the link <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress-358261-1112872.cloudwaysapps.com\/\">https:\/\/wordpress-358261-1112872.cloudwaysapps.com\/<\/a> \u2013 which is still publicly accessible! Wow. Some images are served from there as well. (I wonder why my browser is not firing a mixed content warning as the staging site does not have a valid SSL certificate. Anyone?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design is quite minimal, with some big type, huge images and a good amount of whitespace. The layout is somewhat unusual and does not follow the logo-on-top-left-followed-by-a-horizontal-menu standard. The website rather has a huge and expandable navigation on the left side with a vertically centered logo. What throws me off a little is the fact that I cannot access all three tiles before scrolling, and that already the second tile with \u201cMonarchy\u201d is cut off (see the full-screen screenshot above). While I obviously wasn\u2019t involved in the design process I might have suggested to start with a big image of the royal pair filling the whole area right of the menu bar, and placing the three tiles below. Especially, because now there is an image of Harry (and two men on a beach) on the very top, but Meghan is somewhat hidden below. But what do I know\u2026 \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The website is running a number of different fonts \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linotype.com\/1574462\/palatino-family.html\">Palatino<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/canadatype.com\/product\/semplicita-pro\/\">Semplicita<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sharptype.co\/typefaces\/ogg-superfamily\/ogg\/\">Ogg<\/a> \u2013 which seem to be hosted locally, as per the <a href=\"https:\/\/sussexroyal.com\/wp-content\/themes\/bucky\/fonts.css\">theme\u2019s font stylesheet.<\/a> The combination of the fonts is a bit random for my taste but the overall design does transport an official and \u201croyal\u201d feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WordPress Plugins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The website is running the popular Yoast SEO plugin, easily detectable in the source code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"924\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-YOAST.png\" alt=\"The screenshot shows the source code of the website featuring the HTML comments \u201cThis site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin\u201d and a couple of Open Graph tags.\" class=\"wp-image-733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-YOAST.png 924w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-YOAST-300x114.png 300w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-YOAST-768x291.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 924px) 100vw, 924px\" \/><figcaption>Reference to the Yoast SEO plugin in the source code<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was not able to detect any further plugins. Please add your findings in the comments!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Privacy and GDPR Compliance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The website is pretty light on trackers but it needs to be running Google Analytics (GA), of course. While the use of GA is declared in the website\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sussexroyal.com\/cookies-policy\/\">Cookie Policy<\/a> the website fails to anonymize the IP addresses of users \u2013 at least as far as I can tell from the GA snippet in the header which is missing the <code>'anonymize_ip': true<\/code> parameter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"804\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Google-Analytics.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-736\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Google-Analytics.png 804w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Google-Analytics-300x70.png 300w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Google-Analytics-768x179.png 768w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Google-Analytics-800x187.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px\" \/><figcaption>Screenshot from the source code showing the Google Analytics snippet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a cookie notice popping up on first visit but there is no prior blocking of scripts: the Google Analytics script seems to be loaded anyway before the visitor accepts the use of cookies. Furthermore, clicking on the link offered in the popup in case I wouldn&#8217;t \u201cconsent to our cookie policy\u201d did not have to seem any effect.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Scripts-1024x551.png\" alt=\"The screenshot shows that analytics.js is loaded from Google servers before users consent to the cookie policy.\" class=\"wp-image-738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Scripts-1024x551.png 1024w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Scripts-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Scripts-768x413.png 768w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Scripts-1283x690.png 1283w, https:\/\/voneff.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/voneff-blog-sussexroyal-website-screenshot-source-code-Scripts.png 1664w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Screenshot from the website on first load with open Chrome dev tools<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sussexroyal.com\/cookies-policy\/\">Cookie Policy<\/a>\u201d does mention Google Analytics as a source for \u201cThird-party cookies\u201d but is missing quite a lot of information required by the GDPR, among others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> The name and contact details of the website owner<\/li><li> The lawful basis for the processing of personal data, and the details of transfers of the personal data to any third countries or international organisations <\/li><li> The retention periods for the personal data <\/li><li> The right to withdraw consent <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information on informatione requirements under the GDPR visit <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/for-organisations\/guide-to-data-protection\/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr\/the-right-to-be-informed\/what-privacy-information-should-we-provide\/\">ico.org.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Users from the European Union (last time I checked the UK still is a member) most certainly are one of the main target groups of the website. From my perspective though, the website <strong>does not comply even with the most basic provisions of the GDPR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The website loads reacts pretty quickly from my personal perspective \u2013 apart from the rather annoying intro on first load. The analytics tools do see room for some easy improvement, though. <a href=\"https:\/\/gtmetrix.com\/reports\/sussexroyal.com\/14eG4qSm\">GTmetrix<\/a> awards only a \u201cB\u201d and a \u201cPageSpeed Score\u201d of 87%, denouncing the missing minifications of stylesheets (which made them also pretty easy to inspect). A full audit certainly is out of scope here but a quick scan shows that basic requirements seem to have been met: the website can be navigated with the keyboard, color contrasts seem sufficient, aria labels are present, images have descriptive alt-texts. Some font sizes are a little small, though, and breadcrumbs would have been nice. Anyway, the efforts are resulting in a pretty high accessibility score in the Lighthouse test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, this has been fun (and has eaten up way more time than I expected). The <em>Duke and Duchess of Sussex<\/em> certainly got themselves a nice website there. I did find some room for improvement though (cheers <em>Article <\/em>\ud83d\udc4b).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why did I do this little review? Well, besides the fact that being a smartass is super fun, I try to learn and improve my own website projects by looking at the work of others. That\u2019s actually how I learned all I know regarding website development \u2013 which is still not much, and I am a little afraid now that people will be blasting this website and other projects of mine.
