Avatar Privacy
With your consent, an anonymised string (hash) is created from your email address and sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. Gravatar’s privacy policy: automattic.com/privacy. Once your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible next to it. Neither the hash nor the email address are published. Your choice is stored in a cookie for one year, so you do not have to tick the box again.
Webmention
Webmentions let other websites notify this site that they link to a post. An incoming Webmention is processed as a request to publish it as a response: the plugin processes your name, the profile picture and address of your website and personal information published in your post. You can ask for the deletion of one or all of your Webmentions at any time.
Hosting and server log files
This website is hosted by Mittwald CM Service GmbH & Co. KG, Königsberger Straße 4–6, 32339 Espelkamp, Germany, under a data processing agreement according to Art. 28 GDPR. With every request the server automatically stores information your browser sends: IP address, date and time, the requested address, referrer, browser and operating system. This is necessary to deliver the website and to protect it against attacks (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The log files are deleted automatically after a short time.
To protect against attacks, requests are also checked on the server by security plugins (Wordfence, Patchstack), which process your IP address (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Audience measurement with Plausible Analytics
To understand which posts are read, I use Plausible Analytics by Plausible Insights OÜ, Västriku tn 2, 50403 Tartu, Estonia. Plausible sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. Your IP address is used only briefly to form, together with your browser, a daily changing identifier that cannot be reversed; only aggregated numbers are stored (for example page views, referring site, country, device type). The data is processed on servers in the EU. The script is delivered through this website. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in privacy-friendly audience measurement (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). VG Wort counting pixel
Many texts include a counting pixel of Verwertungsgesellschaft WORT (VG Wort), Untere Weidenstraße 5, 81543 Munich, Germany. VG Wort uses it to determine how often a text is read, so that authors receive their share of statutory remuneration. Your browser loads an invisible image from a VG Wort server (met.vgwort.de), which technically transmits your IP address and information about your browser, the time and the page. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in taking part in this remuneration scheme (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). See VG Wort’s privacy policy on vgwort.de.
Comments
When you write a comment, I store your name, your email address, the comment, the time and your IP address. Your email address is not published. The IP address allows me to act on unlawful content. Comments are checked for spam by the Antispam Bee plugin, on this server only and without external services. There is no field for your own website. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; comments are kept until you ask for their deletion.
Embedded content
Some posts contain content from other providers: videos from YouTube (Google Ireland Ltd.), audio from SoundCloud, code from GitHub Gist, animations from Giphy and posts from X (Twitter). This content only loads after you consent to the “Marketing” category in the consent settings or on the placeholder (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, Section 25(1) TDDDG). Your browser then sends data such as your IP address to the provider, who may also set cookies and transfer data to third countries such as the USA. You can withdraw your consent at any time via “Cookie settings” at the end of every page.
Reading settings in your browser
When you change the text size, light or dark appearance, focus mode or the sidebar, the website remembers these settings in your browser’s local storage. They are not sent to the server and can be deleted in your browser settings. Storing them is necessary for the function you explicitly asked for (Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG).
